- The personal edition of AntiVir is one of the best free antivirus programs we've seen and offers effective protection against almost all computer viruses on the stand alone PC. This version detects over 50,000 different types of virus (macro etc) and can scan/repair macro viruses fast. AntiVir is made in Germany and is freely available to people using it non-commercially.

AntiDote
One of the more effective free antivirus programs that doesn't need a system installation. The current version supports a 20,000+ database of viruses and includes special list checkers. The programmer's site features a mailing list where you can discuss new developments or bring forward problems/improvements to the program. The virus pattern is updated regularly and free to update.

AVAST
This free-for-non-commercial-use antivirus package is compatible with many Windows platforms such as Windows 9x/Me, NT/2000 and even XP. It allows you to identify any viruses on your system's machine and remove them as necessary. A "rescue disk" can also be created so that if your system cannot boot-up, the virus causing the problem can be quickly removed via a floppy.

The Anti-Virus Disk Program is a handy application that will create a disk for cleaning your boot sector, scanning files and disinfecting your computer. Features of AVDisk also include automatic RAM drive mounting and software decompression, adjustable keyboard layouts for several countries, basic usage help files and the ability to span the software across many other disks

AVG Free Edition
An excellent program that is reliable and will guard your desktop computer from viruses and harmful files that you might acquire from floppy disks or via the Internet. There are many features, but some of the most useful are the email scanner, real-time protection, scheduled tasks and automatic disinfections. Note: a free, online registration is required before you can download.

I-Love-You-Bug-Cleaner
We have seen the sheer power of this small and hard to catch virus. It can spread across the world within hours and cripple vital computing terminals. The "I Love You Cleaner" allows any home user, or indeed a business person to prevent/clean the virus from their systems. It is recommended that small-medium sized businesses take advantage of the program.

KAK Virus Cleaner
Another useful program which comes in handy when you get the "KAK Computer Virus". The program also includes a patch which attempts to block any further attacks. This virus spreads through email clients such as Outlook Express and Eudora. The Mail Cleaner program (above) is also worth downloading for this problem, as is a freeware virus scanner.

With so many "super viruses" going around it isn't surprising that people are reluctant to open email attachments. Mail Cleaner stops the worry and will clean out any dodgy files it finds before you read the message, meaning you can download with confidence. Works with recent versions of Microsoft Outlook/Express since these packages seem to receive many viruses.

Symantec's Kill CIH Program
The Chernobyl virus is arguable the most common and destructive virus. This freeware program written by programmers at Symantec will scan and then clean all known variants of the CIH virus from Windows 95 and 98 memory. VCatch
A free antivirus tools for Windows based operating systems. VCatch is aimed at those people who use popular Internet programs (such as ICQ), Web based email services and visit other places where "dodgy" files are extremely common. The program is very good at detecting viruses and will even guard your email: Microsoft Outlook (Express), Eudora and Netscape Messenger.
